Natural Hazards Center – University of Colorado Mary Fran Myers Scholarship

About Natural Hazards Center – University of Colorado :
Since 1976, the Natural Hazards Center has served as a national and international clearinghouse of knowledge concerning the social science and policy aspects of disasters. The Center collects and shares research and experience related to preparedness for, response to, recovery from, and mitigation of disasters, emphasizing the link between hazards mitigation and sustainability to both producers and users of research and knowledge on extreme events.

A basic goal of the Center is to strengthen communication among researchers and the individuals, organizations, and agencies concerned with reducing damages caused by disasters. More than a quarter century of cultivating discourse among these groups has placed the Natural Hazards Center center-stage in both the national and global hazards communities

Details :
The Mary Fran Myers Scholarship recognizes outstanding individuals who share Myers’ commitment to disaster research and practice and have the potential to make a lasting contribution to reducing disaster vulnerability

At least one scholarship recipient each year will receive financial support allowing them to attend the Annual Natural Hazards Research and Applications Workshop. Scholarships can cover part or all of transportation, meals, and Workshop registration costs.

Recipients are recognized at the Workshop and may be asked to serve as panelists, where they can highlight their research or practical experiences with hazards and disasters.

As the longtime co-director of the Natural Hazards Center, Myers recognized that many of the people and organizations that could benefit from and contribute to the workshop—including local practitioners, students, and international professionals—were among those least likely to afford it. The scholarship was established in 2003 to fulfill Myers’ request that qualified and talented individuals receive support to attend, ensuring that representatives of all ages, professions, and communities be represented at the workshop.

Myers served as co-director of the Natural Hazards Center for 16 years until her death in 2004. Reducing disaster loss was her life’s work.

During her tenure, she helped to bring about a fundamental changes in hazards perspectives and instituted farsighted and sustainable ways of dealing with extreme environmental events. In addition, she provided leadership, guidance, grace, and laughter and established a standard of excellence admired and emulated by her colleagues. She was an innovator, a mentor, and a creative spirit who touched many lives. Her legacy has had a lasting impact on the global hazards community.

Eligibility and Application :
Hazards practitioners, students, and researchers with a strong commitment to disaster management and mitigation and who reside in North America or the Caribbean are eligible to enter. Applicants do not need to be citizens of these areas to qualify. Applicants from other world regions will be eligible for the scholarship in 2011.

Previous attendees of the Natural Hazards Workshop are not eligible for the 2010 Mary Fran Myers Scholarship. Preference is given to those who can demonstrate financial need.

Applications must be received by March 29, 2010.

2010 Cagny Scholarship

About CAS :
In the early 1900s in the United States, problems requiring actuarial treatment were emerging in sickness, disability, and casualty insurance-particularly in workers compensation, which was introduced in 1911. The differences between the new problems and those of traditional life insurance led to the organization in 1914 of the Casualty Actuarial and Statistical Society of America, with 97 charter members of the grade of Fellow. Dr. I.M. Rubinow, who was responsible for the Society’s formation, became its first president. The Society adopted its present name in 1921.

Since the problems of workers compensation were the most urgent, many members played a leading part in developing the scientific basis for that line of insurance.

From its inception the Society has grown constantly, not only in membership, but also in range of interest and in scientific and related contributions to all lines of insurance other than life, including automobile, fire, homeowners, commercial multiple peril, and others.

Objective :
The objective of the scholarship is to further students’ interest in the property/casualty actuarial profession and to encourage the pursuit of the Casualty Actuarial Society designations.

An applicant must have demonstrated high scholastic achievement and strong interest in pursuing an actuarial career in the property/casualty insurance industry.

Preference will be given to applicants native to the Greater New York area or attending universities in the Greater New York area.

Procedure :
An application is considered complete when it includes:

The 3-page CAGNY Scholarship application.

The recommendation form included with this application, preferably completed by an instructor who knows the applicant well.

A current official transcript.
