About Indian Maritime University (IMU) :
The erstwhile National Institute of Port Management was set up as an autonomous organization and registered under the Tamilnadu Societies Registration Act 1975 for the purpose of imparting training for the port personnel. The Institute has in later years expanded its activities to cover the training needs of merchant navy personnel as well.

Ministry of Shipping, Government of India has recently notified the up-gradation of NIPM into National Maritime Academy in order to fully reflect the present scope of the Institute’s activities and to further enhance the level of its coverage of maritime education and training. Accordingly, the Institute has been renamed as National Maritime Academy with effect from 07/02/2006

Eligibility :
Pass in 10 + 2 examination from a recognized Board/University with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM), with not less than 55% marks in PCM aggregate.

With Physics as an individual subject in any one of the years of BSc, with not less than 50% marks in the final year of B.Sc., from a recognized University provided that the candidate must have passed 10 + 2 examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) from a recognized Board.
BE/BTech or its equivalent degree from IIT or from a college recognized by AICTE/UGC/DEC. Should have passed with not less than 50% marks in English as a separate subject, at either 10th or 12th standard or in the Degree programme conducted by a recognized Board/University.

Note1:
Those appearing in eligibility educational qualification examination are also eligible to apply    provided they meet all the eligibility criteria and produce the certificates to that effect.

The candidates with three year Diploma from a recognized polytechnic are also eligible for making application for the entrance test as the three-year polytechnic Diploma is equated with 10+2 examination and accordingly their PCM aggregate in the Diploma programme shall not be less than 55%.

Age Limit:
1.      Not more than 25 years
2.      The age limit is relaxable by 2 years in case of female candidates and 5 years for SC/ST candidates.

How to Apply :
The Prospectus can be obtained from IMU on weekdays (working hours) on payment of Rs.SOO/- (Rs.450/- for SC/ ST candidates) by way of Demand Draft drawn in favour of Indian Maritime University, payable at Chennai from 18th Nov12009 or can be downloaded from www.imu.tn.nic.in. The filled in Application form should reach in an envelope superscribed “Application form for Diploma in Nautical Science leading to B.Sc. (Nautical Science)” to the Head (Nautical Science), IMU, Chennai on or before 8th Dec’ 2009. Applications received after 08/12/2009 will not be entertained
